Beatleing Again
In which I get back to talking and writing about the Fab Four’s early days, talk about talking Cars, and visit UNCLE with friends.
After a gap of four months I have at long last returned to the world of The Beatles with the release of a new episode of THE FORGOTTEN BEATLES series on my Before They Were Beatles podcast network, plus a relaunch of the Before They Were Beatles monthly newsletter right here on Substack.
During the break I did some thinking about the Beatles newsletter and its content and made some decisions.
That from this point on the newsletter would be totally FREE - no more paywalled content
It will be more closely aligned with the Before They Were Beatles podcast
I want to share my love of The Beatles on the printed page.
As a result I’ll be adding more podcast-related behind-the-scenes content, plus looking at selected items from my Beatles bookcase.
For those interested in my monthly Beatles ramblings just search for Before They Were Beatles on your podcast platform of choice - or you can listen to it just by clicking HERE.

Word Slinging
I had a fun time at the Maryland Writers Association get-together last weekend sharing my presentation on "How Lightning McQueen Made Me a Better Writer (or 5 Things I Learned Writing the CARS Comic)". It seemed to keep people engaged and entertained.
Talking of Maryland I’m delighted to have been accepted for my first local author’s event since our move back.
It’s an interesting event where instead of asking folks to come to a bookish event, we are going to where folks hang out - the pub.
So if you are in the Baltimore area come check out the Books & Brews event on 16th November. I’ll be there from 11:00am until 2:30pm with some of the historical short-story anthologies that have my words in them.
Podcast Procrastinations
On the latest Rogue Agents show at the On Her Majesty’s Secret Podcast network the gang returns to the secret headquarters behind the tailor’s shop to discuss the 6th episode of the first season of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - The Green Opal Affair.

Books Read in 2024 - “The Formula” by Joshua Robinson & Jonathan Clegg.
Next year will be my 50th year of following F1 (good grief!) and over those decades I’ve read more books and articles about various aspects of the sport than I can count. So I didn’t expect to find one with a new take - but I was pleasantly surprised by how The Formula managed to do just that.
Instead of focusing on race results or drivers, this history of the sport looks at it from an organizational and business perspective with a focus on what laid the foundation for its rapid growth in popularity over the last few years.
At its core it remains a very human story built around the diverse personalities both in the cockpit and in the garages, and board rooms that made F1 the fascinating story it’s been for over 70 years.
This is well well-paced and engaging read that serves as an excellent primer to the sport and its history that will inform both the long-term as well as the newer Netflix-era fans.
Our online bookstore at Bookshop.org is fully up to date with the books read so far in 2024, so you can pick up copies of any that interest you, while also helping out local independent bookstores .
Weekly Web Round-Up
Batman On The Cover - The journey through Batman’s comics publishing history continues as we move into July 1969 with books published in Australia, Brazil, and Denmark. All of these featured translated reprints of previously published US covers, so there are no real standouts this week.
